Repositories are not just for researchers

Discover how a well-structured knowledge repository can seamlessly connect researchers' insights with decision-makers' needs, fostering collaboration and driving smarter decisions.

Imagine a tool that doesn't just collect dust on a shared drive but actively transforms the way your organisation operates.

Picture a dynamic library of synthesised knowledge, readily accessible and self-servable, designed to bring teams, stakeholders, and leadership closer to the insights they need to tackle their most significant challenges.

This is the promise of a well-crafted knowledge repository.

I find it's helpful to think of a knowledge repository as a means to both consolidate and distribute insights.

(No, not that research graveyard on your shared drive 💀)

I’m talking about a library of synthesised knowledge that’s accessible to the entire organisation.

Because a knowledge repository is far more than a storage system—it's a bridge connecting insights from frontline researchers to the decision-makers who need them. To truly leverage its potential, the repository must engage an active network of both ‘Contributors’ and ‘Consumers.’

Contributors

Contributors are the heartbeat of the repository, often hailing from teams like user experience research (UXR), market research, and data science. They share fresh insights, uncover patterns, and identify gaps, helping to piece together the larger puzzle of organisational knowledge.

Consumers

Consumers are the decision-makers who rely on these insights to make informed choices. They need quick and efficient access to relevant information to streamline their decision-making processes.

---

Unfortunately, repositories are often built with researchers' needs in mind, neglecting the broader organisational impact. A truly effective repository should not only make researchers more efficient but also serve the critical needs of decision-makers.

If I could turn back time, here's what I would emphasise about building and scaling repositories for both user groups:

For Contributors, the key is to highlight the 'aha moment'—when they realise how their contributions fit into the bigger picture. Encourage them to tag their insights and connect them with related knowledge. This practice not only clarifies the landscape of information but also fosters a sense of purpose and alignment.

For Consumers, the focus should be on immediate relevance. Instead of generic search tests, tailor the onboarding process to their current priorities. Help them navigate the repository to find insights pertinent to their pressing challenges, thereby demonstrating the repository's value in real-time decision-making.

Closing thoughts

Building and scaling an effective knowledge repository requires careful planning and a keen understanding of the distinct needs of contributors and consumers.

By focusing on these core user groups, you can create a system that not only enhances research efficiency but also drives informed decision-making across your organisation.

The key lies in fostering an environment where contributors feel empowered to share their insights and where consumers can easily access relevant information to support their strategic objectives.
